Official Summary[]
The adventure continues in this fifth book in the New York Times bestselling series.
The sun is shining in the Hundred Isles, and yet the path forward seems crowded with shadows. Conor, Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan have traveled across the world, seeking a set of powerful talismans in order to keep them from enemy hands. Throughout their journey, the young heroes have been hounded by pursuers who always seem to know just where to find them. Now they know why.
One of them is a traitor.
As they navigate the crystal waters of this tropical paradise, the team can't help but suspect each other. There's a spy in their midst, and before this mission is over, a deadly trap will close around them.
Plot[]
The chapter begins with an explanation in a location in Stetriol titled Muttering Rock, Kovo the Ape’s prison. Kovo is muttering on how he would get revenge on the Greencloaks after the First Devourer War. Soon after, a boy visits him at the rock but he was being controlled by Gerathon the Serpent, and she states that she brought him there with his spirit animal: a buzzard. Gerathon gives Kovo a status report on how the Conquerors have done in stealing the talismans and jokes cruelly on how she controlled Rollan’s mother. Soon after, the boy begins to burn from the desert heat, causing Gerathon to take him back, but before she leaves, Kovo asks how much longer until he will be free and she replies "Soon". Abeke misses her home as they pass by Nilo. Conor gets attacked by a Conqueror’s seagull who tried to get the Granite Ram. Meilin still suspecting Abeke is working for the Conquerors starts an argument with her leaving Abeke sad. Conor later tries to comfort her. Shortly after, as they get close to the islands, Rollan spots Conqueror ships. As they wait, Bile-fed sharks begin attacking the ships’ rockback whales. This causes Meilin to jump over the railing to help, leaving Rollan furious and worried. They win the encounter due to the Queen of the Hundred Isles, Kalani and other Greencloaks joining. To begin their journey to Mulop the Octopus, they must gain help from the Queen’s grandfather Tangaroa, who dislikes Abeke and Uraza immediately. He challenges Abeke to race his orangutan, Ngaio in order to gain his help, which Abeke wins by gaining Ngaio’s trust by stopping mid race to help a crying baby orangutan. Tarik, Rollan, and Meilin set off to Nightshade Island for the white conch. While Kalani, Conor, and Abeke go to Sunlight Island for the black conch.
