The book starts with Conor having a dream. He describes what he is, and then a voice calls out. Tellun tells Conor that it is the end of an era and he needs him here. He then realizes that everything was on fire, and that his friends needed help. He saw his friend Meilin fighting Greencloaks, Rollan was fighting a giant snake, and Abeke was swarmed by Conquerors. He tried calling out for Briggan, but he realized he was in passive state. He looked at the tattoo for too long and it disappeared from his arm. Kovo tries to attack him, but he falls off a cliff and catches the ledge. Then an enormous eagle, which is assumed to be Halawir, appears above him. He sees Tarik on it, and he is happy. But when he tries to take his hand, it turned out to be Shane. Shane withdrew his hand and let Conor fall.

The next chapter starts with Rollan looking out of a window of Greenhaven. He went to Abeke looking out over the landscape. He thinks that it feels like just yesterday that Shane stole the talismans, but it was actually a few weeks ago. He keeps thinking they have to act fast, and rescue Meilin. He yearns to tell her the newest joke and make her laugh, only to realize she wasn't there. He starts thinking about the weather. The weather has been odd, because The Evertree is being disrupted. Even the animals were acting odd. He tells Essix to go hunt them, but she didn't want to. He later tells a joke to Abeke to stop dancing, ( seeing as she is a Rain Dancer ) but Abeke didn't laugh, so he let it go. He then says that Olvan says that they should be able to set soon. Abeke asked if there were any new messages, probably waiting for her father’s. They sent stormy petrels to get help from other Greencloaks. Abeke then says Tarik's cloak looks good on him. They had a tender moment until Essix’s screeches caught Rollan’s attention, ending up with them realizing Conor was walking along the castle roof, slipping in rain. Rollan and Abeke run to the top and Abeke barely grabs a hold of his wrist. Conor wakes up mid air and grabs ahold of Abeke. Using the help of Uraza and Rollan, they stumble on the roof as Olvan storms in. After Conor describes his dream again, Lenori, who entered with Olvan, says that it could be a sign from Tellun that the final stand is coming. Olvan agrees, and says that reinforcement Greencloaks will arrive soon.

Later in the day, Finn, Maya, Kalani and a few others arrive to help. Rollan tries to greet them, but he is taboo, so Kalani cannot acknowledge him. At dinner, Olvan says that Finn, Maya and Kalani will accompany the Four Fallen on a smaller mission to Stetriol for the final battle, while a larger force of Greencloaks, led by Olvan will meet up with them later.

Then we switch to Meilin, she sits in a cell, and Shane visits her. First she is happy, thinking the Greencloaks are there to help, but the look on Shane arrived with two guards. After Shane reveals that he is the Reptile King, Meilin attacks him and lands a punch on the jaw, but the Bile clouds her mind for a moment, and Shane releases his crocodile. Gerathon then forces Meilin to call Jhi into the passive state, but Meilin fights back, thinking of Abeke. Jhi helps her, and she hits Shane again on the cheek, knocking him back. They tie ropes around her hands, but Meilin saw fear in Shane’s eyes, and she feels hopeful.

The next morning they leave on the “Tellun’s Pride”. When Conor Abeke and Rollan train with their new caretaker, Dorian, Rollan feels resentful, as he thinks Dorian cannot measure up to Tarik, and Tarik’s death is still fresh on his mind. Soon they stop at a port city called Balanhara.

The city was sacked by multiple Conquerer raids, and it is filled with beggars. Conor, Abeke and Rollan were tasked with getting breakfast for the crew and themselves, but the meager supply of food carts only sold potatoes and other root vegetables not damaged by the Conquerors, and rotten meat. The only cart that sold anything good was at the end of the street, selling meat buns. But as they were walking back to the ship, they ran across some beggar children, and gave their meat buns to them, but one of them saw Abeke’s tattoo, and the children started shouting “the Four Fallen are here!” They tried to leave quickly, but a crowd was forming around them. However, Abeke saw something fly past her head and an arrow hit a man next to her. Maya (who had gone with them) dropped her precious fresh water, as the crowd panicked. She realized that a seagull that was flying nearby might have been a Conqueror's spirit animal, and they were shooting at them from the rooftops. They got back to the ship safely, and their assailants disappeared. Dorian asked what happened, and told them that they were drawing too many eyes and had to be more careful. Rollan said that Tarik would’ve been proud of them, and Dorian flinched, but it only lasted for a moment. He says that Tarik and him trained together in the Greencloaks, and that he already knew what Tarik would’ve done. They left Balanhara, and Abeke wondered if the seagull might’ve just been a coincidence.

Rollan woke up the next morning on the boat, and stood at the prow as Essix flew overhead. He then realized Kalani was there too. He says that if they don’t make it through their journey, he would rather not spend his last moments like this. Kalani gives up, and talks to him. She says that the whales are sick, and that the water is poisonous. Rollan wonders if they are close enough to Stetriol to cut loose the rock backs. Essix screeches, and they realize that they are near a spiky cove. Kalani says through her dolphin she can tell that the whales are tired, but they will try to get them through. As they make their way through, Essix calls again, and Rollan and the others see a Conqueror ship behind them, and Abeke realizes they were followed by the seagull.
